Introducing Zanela

Zanela is an independent South African advertiser discovery platform. Advertisers build their own profiles, describe the services they offer and choose the areas they advertise in, and visitors use the platform to find them.

Photography sits inside that system. A well-made photograph helps an advertiser present an accurate, attractive and trustworthy version of themselves, and it helps a visitor understand who they are contacting before they make contact at all.

Photographers support the platform by creating those profile images. We handle the brief, the moderation and the publication; you bring the framing, the light and a good working manner with the person in front of your lens.

Why partner with Zanela

Photographer partnerships are freelance and assignment-based. Here is what that actually means, without inflated promises.

Freelance assignments

Work is offered job by job when an advertiser in your coverage area needs photography. Each assignment is separate, and you choose whether it fits.

Scheduling around your own diary

There is no rota and no minimum number of shoots. Availability is discussed per assignment, subject to what is actually on offer at the time.

Portfolio material with permission

Where an advertiser gives documented permission, a completed shoot can add work to your own portfolio. Without that permission, client images stay private.

A varied range of clients

Advertisers differ in age, style, setting and experience in front of a camera, which keeps the work from becoming one repeated template.

Possible repeat work

Advertisers refresh their photographs from time to time. A shoot that runs well can lead to being asked again — but no volume is promised.

Room to grow into new areas

As the network expands, photographers who cover wide areas or travel well can be considered for assignments beyond their home town.

Nothing on this page is an offer of employment, a guaranteed number of assignments or a promised income. Each shoot is agreed separately, with its own fee and scope, before any work starts.

What we are looking for

We are looking for photographers who can produce calm, credible portraits in ordinary conditions.

Portrait photography

Confident, natural framing of a single person, with direction that puts an inexperienced subject at ease.

Professional profile photographs

Images that read clearly at small sizes on a phone screen and still look considered full size.

Lifestyle photography

Relaxed, believable frames that suggest a setting and a mood without staging something false.

Tasteful glamour photography

Elevated, respectful glamour work shot with the advertiser's agreed boundaries as the brief.

Indoor and available-light work

Control over small rooms, mixed light and unhelpful backgrounds — the normal conditions of this work.

Studio photography

Clean staging, controlled light and consistent results when a studio setting suits the advertiser.

Mobile and location shoots

A lighting and background kit that travels, plus the judgement to make an ordinary room work.

Composition and consistency

Sharp focus where it belongs, straight horizons, sensible crops and a set that holds together as a group.

You must be comfortable working respectfully with adult advertisers and within the photographic boundaries they agree to. Explicit content is not required — our profiles need tasteful, usable portrait and lifestyle images, and you can decline any frame outside the brief.

Photography requirements

These are the practical standards every assignment is measured against.

  1. 1

Around three strong photographs per advertiser

Initially roughly three usable images per advertiser, subject to the brief for that assignment. Three good frames beat fifteen forgettable ones.

  2. 2

    High-resolution originals, unedited

You deliver the original, unedited files at full resolution through the approved private channel we send you. No compressed exports and no app-filtered copies.

  3. 3

    Zanela handles post-production

Editing, cropping, branding, watermarking and publishing currently sit with our team, so published results stay consistent across the platform.

  4. 4

    Technical quality

Sharp where it matters, properly exposed, well lit and cleanly composed. Images must be appropriate to the advertiser's profile and brief.

  5. 5

    No specified camera brand

We assess the quality of the result, not the label on the body. If your photographs meet the standard, the equipment is your call.

  6. 6

    No independent publishing or reuse

Client images may not be posted, sold, shared or added to your portfolio without documented permission from the advertiser and Zanela.

  7. 7

    Publication rules stay enforced

Zanela's existing approved-image watermark and date-of-shoot requirements continue to apply at the platform publication stage.

Expanded editing responsibilities may be negotiated later as the platform grows. Until that is agreed in writing, editing and publishing stay with Zanela.

How the partnership works

Six steps, from first message to published photographs.

  1. Step 1

    Submit your portfolio and location

Send a WhatsApp message with your name, base city or province, coverage areas and a selection of your own work. A link is useful but not required.

  2. Step 2

    Review

We look at photographic quality, relevant experience, the coverage you can realistically offer and how your work suits advertiser profiles.

  3. Step 3

    A conversation

Suitable applicants discuss availability, assignment expectations, pricing and delivery with us. Nothing is agreed on your behalf before this step.

  4. Step 4

    An assignment may be offered

When an advertiser needs photography in your coverage area, we may offer you that specific job with its date, location and brief.

  5. Step 5

    You shoot it

You complete the agreed shoot with the advertiser's consent and agreed boundaries, then submit the original images securely.

  6. Step 6

    Review and publication

Zanela reviews and processes the images through its existing moderation and publication workflows, including watermark and date-of-shoot checks.

Applying does not guarantee acceptance into the network, and acceptance does not guarantee assignments. The fee and the scope of each job are agreed before work begins.

Where we need photographers

We are mapping photographers across all nine provinces, from the metros to towns far from a city studio. Search for your town or filter by province to see the coverage areas we are recruiting for.

Showing 9 of 9 provinces.

Gauteng

Gauteng fits several large cities and their suburbs within an easy drive of one another, so a single shoot day can realistically reach advertisers in more than one metro. Most work here happens indoors — apartments, hotel rooms and small studios — where controlling light and background matters more than scouting a location.

  • Johannesburg
  • Sandton
  • Pretoria
  • Centurion
  • Midrand
  • Soweto

Western Cape

The Western Cape spreads from the city bowl and northern suburbs out through the Winelands and along the Garden Route, so travel time matters when you quote on a job. Coastal light changes quickly and interiors can be small and dim, which rewards photographers who bring their own light.

  • Cape Town
  • Bellville
  • Stellenbosch
  • Paarl
  • George

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal runs from the Durban metro up the north coast and inland to the Midlands and the northern coal belt. Humidity and bright sea light make accurate colour and clean exposure worth planning for, and many shoots take place in compact private spaces.

  • Durban
  • Umhlanga
  • Pietermaritzburg
  • Richards Bay
  • Newcastle

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape's advertiser base is spread across coastal cities and inland towns, so jobs often involve real distance between them. Photographers who can plan a full day around two or three sittings are especially useful here.

  • Gqeberha
  • East London
  • Mthatha
  • Kariega

Free State

The Free State sits at the centre of the country, with Bloemfontein as the main hub and smaller goldfields and eastern highlands towns around it. Studio space is limited in many towns, so portable lighting and a reliable mobile setup help.

  • Bloemfontein
  • Welkom
  • Bethlehem

Limpopo

Limpopo's towns are far apart and often several hours from the nearest city studio. Clear staging, consistent framing and dependable mobile lighting matter more here than a fixed location, and travel must be built into any quote.

  • Polokwane
  • Tzaneen
  • Thohoyandou

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga stretches from the highveld towns of eMalahleni (Witbank), Middelburg and Secunda across to the Lowveld and Mbombela (Nelspruit). Altitude, dust and differences in daylight between the highveld and the Lowveld all affect exposure, so bring light you can trust.

  • eMalahleni / Witbank
  • Middelburg
  • Mbombela / Nelspruit
  • Secunda

North West

North West combines platinum-belt towns with university and farming centres, and advertisers here are often working from home spaces or small guest houses. A calm, discreet and mobile approach is more valuable than elaborate studio gear.

  • Rustenburg
  • Mahikeng
  • Klerksdorp
  • Potchefstroom

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is South Africa's largest province with the longest distances between towns. A single assignment can mean a full day of driving, so photographers who are realistic about travel and willing to cover a wide area are worth talking to first.

  • Kimberley
  • Upington
  • Kuruman

These are recruitment coverage areas. Listing a city or town means we want to hear from photographers who can work there — it is not a claim that a Zanela photographer already operates in that area, or that paid assignments are available there now.

Talented emerging photographers with a demonstrable portfolio

Applicants must be legally eligible to perform the work in South Africa and able to meet the professional requirements on this page, including consent, privacy and delivery standards. If you are unsure whether your experience fits, apply and let us judge the photographs.

Privacy, consent and safety

This work involves private people in private spaces. These rules are not optional, and they apply from the first message you send us.

  • Every person photographed must be an adult aged 18 or older and age-verified through Zanela's existing process before any assignment takes place.
  • Informed consent is required for the shoot itself and for the agreed intended use of the images. Consent is specific, not blanket.
  • No coercive, exploitative or non-consensual photography. If a request feels wrong, stop the shoot and contact us.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, and keep shooting arrangements private and discreet.
  • Never publish identifying information, exact private shoot locations, identity documents or unapproved photographs.
  • Use secure transfers, access controls and documented retention and deletion practices consistent with POPIA.
  • Any reuse of photographs requires the appropriate rights and documented consent.
  • When you apply, send portfolio examples you own or are authorised to share.

Photographer questions, answered

These are the questions we are asked most often by photographers. If something is not covered here, ask it in your WhatsApp message.

How do I become a Zanela photographer?

Send us a WhatsApp message with your name, the city or province you are based in, the areas you can travel to and a selection of your own photographs. We review quality, experience and coverage, and then talk to suitable photographers about availability, pricing and delivery expectations. If an advertiser later needs photography in your coverage area, we may offer you that specific assignment. Nothing is signed or guaranteed before that conversation.

Are you looking for photographers across South Africa?

Yes. We are recruiting nationwide and want to hear from photographers in every province, including smaller towns away from the main metros. The cities and towns listed on this page are the coverage areas we are actively mapping, not a claim that we already have someone in each one.

Do I need professional photography experience?

You need a portfolio that demonstrates you can produce sharp, well-lit, well-composed photographs of people. Formal training is not required and we do not ask for qualifications. Experienced freelancers, studio photographers, independent photography businesses and talented emerging photographers with a demonstrable portfolio are all welcome to apply.

Can I apply without a studio?

Yes. Plenty of good advertiser photography happens in a home, a rented room, a hotel room or a quiet outdoor setting. If you work without a fixed studio, tell us how you set up lighting and backgrounds, and mention the areas you can travel to. Mobile and location photographers are a core part of what we need.

How many photographs are needed per advertiser?

Initially around three strong, usable photographs per advertiser, subject to the brief for that specific assignment. Three good frames are far more useful to an advertiser than fifteen forgettable ones. If an advertiser or a particular brief needs more, it is agreed before the shoot.

Do I need to edit the photographs?

No. Zanela currently handles editing, cropping, branding, watermarking and publishing. Your job is to deliver high-resolution original, unedited files through the approved private channel we give you. Expanded editing responsibilities may be negotiated later as the platform grows, but for now it stays with us so that the published result is consistent across the platform.

How will photographers be paid?

The fee and the scope of each assignment are agreed in writing or in message before the shoot takes place. There is no fixed published rate, because every shoot differs in location, travel and requirement. We do not advertise a rate on this page and we will not invent one for you — the number you agree to for a specific job is the number you are paid for that job.

Can I work part-time?

Yes. Assignments are freelance and offered job by job, so you decide whether an offered shoot fits your diary. There is no minimum number of shoots and no obligation to accept an assignment.

Will Zanela provide clients?

We introduce assignments when an advertiser in your coverage area needs photography, and we may offer you that job. We cannot promise a volume of work, a monthly number of shoots or a steady income, and no photographer should treat an application as a guaranteed pipeline.

Can I apply from a smaller town?

Please do. Several coverage areas on this page are small towns and they are exactly where finding a good local photographer is hardest. If you are the only photographer within a reasonable drive of a town, say so in your message — that is useful information for us.

Can I use a smartphone?

What matters is the quality of the result, not the brand on the body. A recent smartphone with good light control can produce a usable profile photograph, and we judge the images you send rather than the equipment list. If your samples meet the standard, the camera is not the deciding factor.

How do I send my portfolio?

Use the WhatsApp link on this page, which opens with your details already typed. You can paste a link to a portfolio site or social profile, or send a small selection of images directly in the chat. Images sent to us are treated as confidential and are never published on this site.

Can I choose which assignments to accept?

Yes. Every assignment is offered, not imposed. If the date, the location, the travel or the brief does not work for you, you can decline and remain part of the network for future opportunities.

What privacy and consent requirements apply?

Every person photographed must be an adult aged 18 or older who has been age-verified through Zanela's existing process before the assignment. You must obtain informed consent for the shoot and for the agreed intended use, work within the advertiser's clearly stated boundaries, and never take, share or retain images outside the brief. Originals go only to Zanela through the approved private channel. Client images may not be published, shared or used in your own portfolio without documented permission.

Are there guaranteed photography jobs?

No. This page is a general freelance partnership recruitment page, not an advertised vacancy. There is no guaranteed assignment, no guaranteed volume and no fixed earnings. Each job is offered when it arises and agreed separately before work starts.
